ABE - AACHEN BUILDING EXPERTS e.V.ABE: The innovation network along the entire value chain of the construction and real estate industry

The AACHEN BUILDING EXPERTS e. V. (ABE) was founded in 2016 by 33 founding members in the presence of the then NRW Minister of Construction, Michael Groschek.

Today, ABE has more than 160 members. The innovation network brings together leading companies from the construction and real estate industry with the renowned universities RWTH Aachen and FH Aachen, as well as pioneering start-ups. The common goal is to promote and implement innovations through close and direct cooperation between science and business, and to develop new concepts for initial and continuing education.

What makes us unique

Companies and offices from all areas of the value chain – including project development and real estate portfolios, architecture, planning and engineering, as well as construction execution, trades, and manufacturers – work together in practice-oriented projects and visionary groups.
New degree programs, practice-oriented further training, innovative sustainable materials, Smart Building, Building Information Modeling (BIM), robotics, and resource-efficient and circular construction are just some of the topics we are driving forward together!
ABE members include market-defining supra-regional large companies as well as leading medium-sized companies, research and university institutions, and promising start-ups in the construction and real estate sector.
ABE bundles, supports, and networks these interdisciplinary expertises through knowledge transfer and networking events, working groups, seminars, and further training. The innovation network benefits from the driving force of a dynamic, full-time team.
With more than 160 member companies and extensive activities, ABE is established far beyond the Rhineland: with focal points from Aachen via Cologne and Düsseldorf to Bielefeld, in the greater Frankfurt area, and in Stuttgart. – And the expansion continues.

Exzellenzregion Nachhaltiges BauenWe are creating new living spaces

The era of lignite mining is ending in the Rhenish mining region. The region is embarking on a new climate-neutral and livable future. This includes the transformation towards a circular economy. The construction sector plays an important role in this. The project's goal is therefore to promote sustainable construction around the Garzweiler open-cast mine with its new landscapes and settlements.

The LANDFOLGE Garzweiler special-purpose association is supported by the municipalities of Mönchengladbach, Erkelenz, Grevenbroich, Jüchen, Titz, and Bedburg. In cooperation with the city of Mönchengladbach, the Aachen University of Applied Sciences, and other partners, it aims to establish an interdisciplinary network that enables exchange and collaboration on various aspects of sustainable construction. As visible examples, flagship buildings will be constructed on the edge of the open-cast mine by the special-purpose association and in the Lürrip district by the city of Mönchengladbach. They are intended to showcase innovative construction products and processes and serve as platforms for knowledge exchange.

Traditionally, the planning and construction of sustainable buildings are based on the three pillars of sustainability: ecology, economy, and social aspects. Taking these into account, as well as the goals of the economic and structural program for the Rhenish future region, five overarching fields of action have been defined for the strategic orientation of the project: Resources & Circularity, Climate Protection, Energy, Comfort & Health, and Cost-Optimized Planning & Construction. They are intended to serve as guidelines for all project activities, especially for the construction of the flagship buildings. A special focus is placed on circular and resource-optimized construction.

The textile and clothing industry traditionally plays an important role in NRW, but this has significantly declined in the meantime due to structural change caused by globalization. Circular economy and sustainable finishing, among other things, offer opportunities for the textile and clothing industry to reinvent itself and grow with innovative approaches.

Goals

The “Textile Topic Table” is intended to support the transformation of the textile industry as part of a climate-neutral circular economy. The aim is to present current developments at the political and legislative level, and to address critical points as well as obstacles and challenges to politics. In addition, existing funding and consulting opportunities can be made transparent, research needs can be identified, and pilot projects can be initiated. Networking should promote exchange between manufacturers, trade and recyclers among themselves, but also with research and politics. Furthermore, an important task of the topic table will be to formulate a smart strategy for the textile and clothing industry in NRW with the participating experts, in order to focus on medium- and long-term competitive development potentials against the background of the region's existing or developable competencies. This should not only promote innovation, but also strengthen the competitiveness of sustainable business models.

Bioökonomie Verstehen. Verbinden. Unterstützen.Professional support for the technological research projects is provided by the BMBF-funded project Bioökonomie Verstehen. Verbinden. Unterstützen (Bioökonomie-VVU). Bioökonomie-VVU supports structural change in the Rhenish mining area in parallel with innovation.

To this end, complementary actors around the innovation field of bioeconomy are to be brought together in the Rhenish mining area, so that concrete value propositions and solutions emerge through the use of open innovation processes. A special focus of the project funded by the BMBF is on researching the innovation ecosystems around the BioökonomieREVIER innovation cluster and the Bio4MatPro competence center.

The Bioökonomie-VVU project is planned for a period of five years, until the end of 2026, and comprises, on the one hand, accompanying research by a consortium of scientific institutes from RWTH Aachen University and TU Dortmund University, and on the other hand, a management office jointly operated by the Institute for Technology and Innovation Management (TIM) at RWTH Aachen University and the Institute for Plant Sciences (IBG-2) at Forschungszentrum Jülich.
Goals of the Accompanying Research

The overarching goal of the accompanying research is to systematize and utilize findings and experiences in the model region in order to better understand regional innovation ecosystems with their specific challenges and success factors, and to ensure the successful development of the Bioökonomie model region. The content-related accompanying research consists of complementary work packages within which a wide variety of subject areas are researched using an interdisciplinary mix of methods.

Overall, the accompanying research will continuously support the interaction of actors in the model regions and the transfer of new knowledge, develop the regional value proposition, support start-up and settlement activities in the region, strengthen acceptance and perception among citizens with innovative communication and participation concepts, and investigate the regional and ecological impacts of such a transformation. Bioökonomie-VVU aims to make the knowledge generated here and the insights gained usable beyond the existing funding phase for funding programs and for projects – also in other regions – in the long term.

Innovationscluster BioökonomieREVIERInnovation Labs for rapid, practical implementation of science into the economy

An important element of the BioökonomieREVIER Rheinland model region are 14 so-called “Innovation Labs”. These are promising research approaches with very good economic implementation potential. All of them are intended to contribute in different ways to the transformation of the Rhenish region from a fossil-based to a bio-based economy in industry and agriculture.

The innovation labs are networked with each other and thematically bundled into three clusters:

Innovative Agriculture
Biotechnology & Plastics Industry, and
Integrated Biorefinery.

The findings are intended to quickly generate added value and new, novel jobs. This is about much more than “just” scientific knowledge gain. Rather, it is intended to demonstrate by example that closer integration and knowledge transfer from research into the economy can lead to greater added value and sustainability. Because after the end of fossil fuels, the Rhenish region is intended to be permanently future-proof and attractive for people.

In the interdisciplinary research consortium of the “Innovation Labs” of BioökonomieREVIER, regional universities and research institutions are committed to the BioökonomieREVIER Rheinland model region. With institutes from RWTH and Aachen University of Applied Sciences, the Jülich Research Centre, and the Fraunhofer Society, both applied and basic research are represented, as well as further companies from the Rhenish region such as SenseUp Biotechnology GmbH and YNCORIS GmbH & Co. KG.

The innovation labs are funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of the “Structural Change” immediate action program and are supported by the BioökonomieREVIER coordination office.
