Aviation in the Rhineland

Aviation refers to the field of aviation and encompasses both civil and military use of aircraft and other air vehicles. This includes, among others, passenger and cargo air traffic, the aircraft industry, and services around operation and maintenance.

The economic ecosystem "Aviation Rheinisches Revier" that has emerged in recent years through intensive networking aims to bring together competencies from research, industry, and infrastructure operators. It enables the development, testing, and implementation of new aviation technologies and strengthens regional innovation capacity. With the formulation of a corresponding network strategy, a first milestone was reached in 2024. Cooperation between business and science in the aviation sector takes place at three locations in the Rhineland Revier - at the Würselen-Aachen research airfield, Center for Vertical Mobility in Aldenhoven, and at Mönchengladbach Airport.

Production Launch Center Aviation (PLCA)

At the Würselen-Aachen research airfield, technology transfer between research and industry is the focus. Initial projects include the DLR facility "Technologies for Small Aircraft", the Production Launch Center Aviation@NRW, and the planned research center FH-AERO.SCIENCE. At AeroPark 1-3, the settlement of aviation-related research and development is being driven forward.

FSD - Lehrstuhl und Institut für Flugsystemdynamik

Center for Vertical Mobility (CVM)

The Center for Vertical Mobility researches and develops vertical, runway-independent air mobility. Its focus is on trials and tests in real-world laboratories – particularly of person-carrying and unmanned aerial vehicles, from medical drones to air taxis, that are capable of vertical takeoff and landing and feature a high degree of automation.

The Center for Vertical Mobility (CVM) aims to create a unique competence and testing center for vertical mobility in the Rhenish mining region, dedicated to this topic. Vertical mobility will focus on person-carrying and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), ranging from medical drones to air taxis, that are capable of vertical takeoff and landing and feature a high degree of automation. Against this backdrop, the CVM is planned to be located in close proximity to the existing Aldenhoven Testing Center for automotive applications. This will enable joint, cross-modal research into "networked automated mobility" and its integration into a comprehensive, exemplary concept.
